Gunner's Story
The search for a dog truly my own began in March of 2013. One evening, a brindle pup on the Multnomah County Shelter page caught my eye and instantly felt like a must-have. The next morning, with Nymeria along for the ride, we set out “just to look.”
When we reached Gunner’s kennel, my excitement gave me away. During the meet-and-greet, this skinny, flaky pup greeted us by leaping up—and promptly peeing on all three of us. While the others listed reasons to hesitate, my heart was already set. The real test came when Nymeria was introduced. The moment they bowed into play, it felt like surfacing for air after being underwater too long. At last, I had found my dog—Gunner.

Gunner and I saved each other—though, truth be told, he may have saved me more. Life together wasn’t perfect at first. In that very first week, our training began when he swiped a roast off the counter, leaving us with a $50 Taco Bell dinner instead.
I learned Gunner feared smoke on our first camping trip, when he bolted from the fire’s shift, flipping me backward in my chair and nearly pulling my arm out of its socket. Another time, he unzipped the tent at night to guard our site from the picnic table. By morning, the camp host warned that dogs had to be supervised.
When her husband tried to grab the leash from Lofty to “show him how to handle a dog like that,” Gunner taught his own lesson: don’t touch my leash if I don’t approve of you. We left with a lock for the zipper and his vaccination records on file.
Gunner and I saved each other—though, truth be told, he may have saved me more. Life together wasn’t perfect at first but we grew closer as each day passed by.
